An innovative climate education programme fusing storytelling, circus, music, theatre and environmental science for secondary schools. The Climate Wellbeing Project addresses climate change in an informative, meaningful and positive way, with a focus on mental health and wellbeing, and inspiring collective climate action.

Future Influencers - performance for secondary schools.

The Climate Wellbeing Project is funded by the Scottish Government’s Climate Engagement Fund. The project includes our new show - ‘Future Influencers’, outdoor workshops and teacher training that cover key issues around: climate change; biodiversity loss; climate anxiety; nature connection; and global citizenship, contributing to improved mental health for young people and teachers. The project has been designed for the S1-S3 age group and their teachers.

Our creative climate education project for Primary Schools, Positive Imaginings, toured in 2021-23 and has been extremely well received, recently winning a Creative Edinburgh Award (Sustainable Creativity Award 2023).

“Learning for Sustainability (LfS) is an important component of the Curriculum for Excellence, an entitlement for learners and a core part of teachers’ professional standards. It supports the development of knowledge, skills and the values at the heart of the curriculum’s four capacities and provides a mechanism for promoting and working towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, climate and net zero, biodiversity, circular economy, economic and social transformation.

A refreshed action plan placing sustainability at the centre of the Scottish education system has recently been launched – including an ambitious commitment to ensure that every school and early learning setting will be sustainable by 2030: Placing sustainability at the heart of the education system, revolutionising what and how students learn, how the setting manages its physical environment and resources, how staff and learners relate to each other, how they work with their local community and how they reach out and connect to the wider world.

The call from learners and educators is clear: More needs to be done to ensure ALL learners receive their entitlement to LfS. Children and young people are asking for bold ambition and the necessary action to make change happen. They fully recognise the importance of climate and social justice, equality and outdoor learning for their future life and work in the 21st century and want these to be a real and meaningful part of their daily learning experiences and their learner journey as a whole.” (Naomi Dixon, Learning for Sustainability, Youthlink Scotland)

The Climate Wellbeing Project is part of the Scottish Government’s Climate Engagement initiative, which aims to deepen people’s understanding of the climate emergency and help mobilise climate action on the ground. The Climate Engagement Fund (CEF) is a key deliverable against the Net Zero Nation: Public Engagement Strategy for Climate Change, which is a statutory requirement under the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009. It will also support the delivery of the Scottish Government’s Climate Change Plan, Scottish Climate Change Adaptation Programme 2 and Just Transition commitments at a sectoral and place-based level.
